It does amaze me

It amazes me how complicated conveying real estate turns out to be. It's been more than 30 years since I did it but still... There is no mortgage involved at all - buyer or seller. No trust. No contingencies. No nothing.

But, 4 million hoops and this very annoying lady who keeps calling me wanting shit. Today, it's payment for some kind of info. She says she will send me a link to pay. Then she keeps talking. I said send me the link and I'll pay. And she keeps talking. HOLY FUCK WOMAN get off the damn phone and send me the link.

She finally does. I pay. And learn, for the first time, that this hoop will take until the 20th to clear.

Bret The Realtor who, until the offer was signed, communicated way too much, has gone to the crickets. So I have no clue what to expect. Is this the last hoop? Will I have to pay more?

WTF is going on???? Yes, I could ask but screw it. It will happen when it does and then it will be all over. But I am very glad I don't have a mortgage to pay off and a seller's mortgage company to satisfy.

I have recently seen a fair number of headlines explaining what Genzers want/don't want, expect/don't expect, etc. Except, invariably I read it as Geezers which then turns the sentiment on its ear. And leads to LOL.

Yesterday I went down to aqua yoga early and spent 30 minutes swimming laps. I hadn't done that in a while. It was lovely and I think I'll do it again next Monday. I do wish they had more classes in the pool. And/or had their aqua fit classes at a different day/time. They have two aqua fit classes a week and they are 30 minutes after we finish up volleyball. If it were right after, I'd probably stay and do the class. But 30 minutes is too much time to kill when you are starving.

Today my new dresser comes. It will need assembly. I suspect it will not get here until late this afternoon. But, I will be glad to get the extraneous shit into it. I've had a bunch of it sitting out since last week when I made the decision and my closet needs relief, too.

The house cleaner comes at 1:30. I might pop over to the charity shop to hunt for more doll hair OR I might start a new puzzle in the elbow. I don't have to decide for a few hours yet.

I want to take a pill that will cure dry skin. Will one of you please invent that? Thanks. I don't like lotion - don't like applying it and don't like feeling lotioned. A pill would be so much better.

Yesterday, I spent several hours listening to my book and knitting. I discovered that my neck hates this. In the afternoon, I turned on one of those YouTube videos and that helped. I also owe my brother an apology. A couple of weeks ago, when his wife was in the hospital, he was bitching about his phone battery dying so fast. We have the same phone or close to it and my battery lasts for days. I figured he had a bad phone or bad settings or something. Thot snarky thots. Turns out, I now know he was listening to his book or music. Turns out, using the phone does drain the battery severely! Just turning it on, playing one game, and then turning it off - which is what I usually do - does not. But by 5 pm yesterday I was down to about 4%! Glad I kept those snarky thots to myself.

I didn't get a nap in before I had to go to work, and now I am extremely tired and my head hurts. My back also hurts, but that's because I changed out the quail enclosures and then wrangled cats and dogs to the vet, not because I didn't nap. I wish napping fixed back pain, honestly, it would make my life so much easier. I am very sad that I didn't get to nap. I feel like a nap would have made everything a lot more tolerable.

I didn't get any packing done, either. I know: surprise, surprise. I am my own worst enemy these days. Even if I get some packing done this week while I'm on night shifts, I'm definitely going to have to rely on adrenaline-fueled panic in the two weeks before we move. I think I can get it done, but it's going to be a stressful time, for sure.

I am still torn about whether or not to bring some of my furniture with me. I think there simply isn't enough room for most of my bedroom furniture, even with a Murphy bed installed. Part of me wants to bring it anyway and store it in the garage, because eventually I want to tear down the garage (the home inspector said it will need to come down in a few years no matter what) and build what would essentially be an extension to the house. More to the point, I want to build out some extra independent living space just in case one or both of my parents ends up needing to come live with us. So I was thinking an extra bedroom or two, a bathroom, and either a kitchenette or a kitchen, depending on space and how much it would all cost. I obviously don't have the money now (especially not now that my cats need dental surgery), but I am being given a HELOC (Home Equity Line of Credit) to accompany the house, and I might be able to use it for the construction costs. I definitely can't afford to build an entire new house, but something simple might well be doable. I'll have to look into what permits I'd need and what is and isn't allowed on the property, of course, but I like this plan. Of course, we all know what happens to the best-laid plans of mice and men...

Speaking of the cats' dental surgery, I have a sneaking suspicion that we're going to have to switch all the cats over to wet food, at least in part. The vet said he wouldn't make recommendations for food until after the surgery, since we don't know how many teeth are going to need to come out, but even so, adding wet food is probably a good idea. Of course, that is going to be wildly expensive, so I am thinking of starting some rabbit breeding ahead of schedule (I was going to start next year) and use the meat and organs as a base to make my own raw/wet food for the cats. I'll have to consult with my vet to see how complicated the nutrition aspect is for cats (I have heard horror stories about people feeding their pets inadequate "raw food" diets) so that I don't accidentally deprive them of essential nutrients.

I feel like I had more I wanted to post about, but my brain is kind of mush right now, so I guess I'll call it here and hope I remember whatever it was later on today.

Catch you on the flip side, folks!

1. Had another work from home day. Loads of things on my work to-do list and all of them were just stuff to do at the computer, which I can do more comfortably from home and save myself a commute, so that's just what I did. Tomorrow will be mostly WFH as well, since I still have a ton more similar tasks on my to-do list and no meetings scheduled.

2. The heat spell is over and the temps are back down in the 60s (50s at night). We had all the windows open over the weekend but I closed the ones in my bedroom this morning and by the evening we closed them all, as it was not only quite chilly but really windy as well.

3. On Saturday when it was really warm, I looked out the window by my bed and found Tuxie napping in the weeds. This area is just a narrow space (like two feet) between the house and the neighbors' fence, and there's a large bush that kind of blocks it from the front, so the gardeners never get in and trim the weeds, so they're really overgrown and make a nice bed for napping. I checked on him several times after that and he was there for ages, just changing his position every once in a while to get more sun or more shade.

Anyway.
That's my thoughts on that one.

Today has been A Day, and I still have to go to work in about five hours. *falls over*

I cleaned out all the quail enclosures today, as I had been doing only very basic maintenance since getting Covid, and they were pretty gross. The quails deserve a nice clean environment to live in, after all. I also noticed that the quarantine box in which I was keeping my lone male was disintegrating because of the water spilling out of his water dish. The cardboard had softened without my noticing before, and last night I saw that the box was sagging to one side, and the mesh over the "window" in the front was gaping badly.

So today I cut a hole in a new box, lined it with duct tape and plastic, and cut a new window in it so the poor birb isn't just completely in the dark. I couldn't leave him in the old box while I transferred the mesh over, however, so I decided to stick him in for a couple of minutes with the other quail. How bad could it be? I thought. He'll only be in there long enough for me to attach the mesh to the new box. HAH. No sooner had his feet touched the pine chips on the floor of the enclosure, he immediately sprang onto the nearest female, grabbed a bunch of feathers at the base of her head and swung himself onto her back like a cowboy at a rodeo. He was VERY rough with her, and she bucked him off, so he immediately did the same thing to the next closest female. A third female then flew at him and started pecking at him pretty viciously, so I reached in and pulled him out and put him in a bucket while I worked.

Good Lord and butter!

At least now I know that he is, in fact, the problem bird in the bunch. The other male is very gentle with the ladies: all their feathers are growing back, they're all laying consistently every day, and they all like to hang out and tweedle softly together, whereas the first male has been screaming intermittently for the past couple of days. So once I am done with my night shifts he will be turned into dinner. Only gentleman birbs get to hang out with my ladies! Everyone else gets to be eaten.

I then sent my resume to the recruiter who'd asked for it, and then it was time to gather all the pets to take them to the vet for their annual shots. I want to say it went smoothly, but that would be a lie. First off, Octavia decided to hide in the walls and refused to come out. I was able to get Juno in her carrier, and then the dogs freaked the fuck out, because CAAAAAAAAT! I wrangled all three into KK's car and got them to the vet, figuring I would just reschedule Octavia for another day.

Once at the vet, the dogs got their shots, and KK messaged me to tell me that Octavia had graced the living room with her presence. I asked her to put Octavia in her kennel and arranged to leave Juno at the vet's while I drove the dogs home and picked up my truant cat. When I got back, the vet had some very bad news for me: namely, that Juno had lost a lot of weight and that it was very likely due to her teeth rotting in her head. One canine was so loose they were able to just yank it out then and there with no issue, and her other canine is super loose as well. When the vet examined Octavia, he found a really similar problem. So both cats need dental surgery ASAP, and I booked them in for May 28th, which is TWO DAYS before we're meant to move. But honestly, they are in pain and not eating, and I don't want to wait any longer than I have to, especially since I don't know what the vet care situation is in Maxville. There is a veterinary clinic there (I used to take my pets there when I first moved to Ottawa) but I don't know if they're taking new patients, and immediate dental surgery might be a stretch even for them.

So for now we're switching them to wet food until after the surgery, and then we'll see if they can have kibble after that still or if they'll need to be on soft food for the rest of their lives.

I came home just in time to have a Zoom call with my parents, which I totally forgot about until they called me to ask where I was. OOPS. My parents, as usual, immediately told me I should euthanize the cats rather than spend money on surgery for them. My parents are delightful that way. Then my mother asked me how much this "joke" was going to cost me, and when I asked her what "joke" she meant, she listed the number of pets I have (two cats, two dogs). I understand that they are worried about my finances, but fucking hell, it would be nice if they eased up a little. It's not like I'm not going to deny veterinary care to my pets, and I will only give up my pets as a very last resort.

Anyway, apart from that little unpleasantness, we had a nice, if brief chat. Now it's time for me to go get some dinner, and hopefully have a nap and a shower before work.

Pluralstories: Why We Did It Like That
Summary: "Librarians are the secret masters of the universe. They control information. Never piss one off." --Spider Robinson
Word Count: 3450
Notes: Winner of the fan poll this month and sponsored by our fans at LiberaPay and Patreon! Derelict from a "plurals in video games" academic paper that didn't end up happening.

We first got the idea of making a catalog of plural stories in 2009, back when we were in library school. People seemed to want one, and we heard plenty of complaints along the lines of, "I just want to read a story about people like me!" but at best there were lists of a few favorites on a blog or (later on) in an itch.io collection. Arguably the closest thing to a comprehensive catalog was Nita and Anita's now-defunct Multiple Personality and Dissociation Book List, which after a decade in existence listed 161 books with keywords and reviews. However significant, it had major flaws: it was limited to books from a medical standpoint, used only vague keywords like "fiction" and "psychiatry", gave no description of what the books were actually about, and kept the reviews (the only place to find content descriptions) siloed off and organized by reviewer name, rather than book title. Something more comprehensive and searchable was needed.

Tiny trackers [random, science]

Yesterday when I was telling [personal profile] scrottie about the oodles of worms in the compost pile, he got to wondering where all the worms go in winter, and surmised, "Maybe we could put tiny GPS trackers on them to find out."

At which point I think he noticed the smoke coming out of my ears and pointed out he was only joking.

But then I did a search to look up how biologists tag and track slugs, and lo and behold:

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-35643091

How cool, and also, how hilarious! I had thought I might encounter some clever method with tattoo ink or something, but no.

I'm not sure this would actually work with earthworms, though, because of how deep they may go, heh.

Ahh, the glorious Monday after finals week. I was able to get grades submitted for 3 out of 4 obligations. The sticking point this year is the Bicycling class.

The challenge is that it's hard for students to tell how seriously one should take a 1-credit pass/fail Bicycling course.

Dear students, as outlined in your syllabus provided at the start of the semester, your assignments are all posted to our college's LMS, which conveniently informs you of upcoming deadlines, and deadlines you've missed. It might be prudent to look at the assignments and do them. Just a thought. You know, if you actually want to pass.

I also have a handful of bikes that haven't been returned yet. But they're gradually coming back now that I've gotten the cattle prod out. The cattle prod is: if you don't return the bike, you'll wind up with an Incomplete grade, and good luck explaining that one to your financiers, especially if it turns into a failing grade for a 1-credit pass/fail course if you don't turn it into a Pass by the Incomplete deadline.

Shrug! Other than that, I'm over it and turning my attention to summer tasks.

Today's summer tasks have been other fun things, like filling out hazardous waste disposal labels for chemical disposal, some chemical receiving, making more cricket egg cup soil, feeding the fish and crabs, and putting away a small handful of the larger number of things that really need to be put away.

I should also work on the list of things to work on with my research students in June. As one of several lists that need to be worked on (e.g. also the List of Manuscripts Requesting Attention, Please).

Whee. At least typing this all out has been enough to get me to focus and actually draft out some of these initial lists on the whiteboard in my office. Progress!

Oh yeah, and get Facilities to fix my office. That could be a tough sell. Hmm. (floor tiles peeling up, paint damaged by various forces that aren't entirely me, damaged ceiling tiles, a couple things that could stand to be moved a foot one way or another, if the walls actually get repainted). I think I may have to frame it all around the point that it would be embarrassing to meet with prospective students because of how shabby the office is. (other than the point that one can shout, "Safety!" as regards the floor; I don't want to pull that trigger prematurely, though).

I have to be careful about this item, though, because college budgets are a funny topic, and it isn't clear to me whether this is all inexpensive because it taps mostly just existing labor, or expensive because the labor is stretched too thin already and the floor tiles are made of gold (they aren't, really, but you get the idea, I hope).

Oh yeah! And --

The video I was watching on Friday was Stephanie Canada's newest box opening, where some of the patterns from the late 50s declared "BISHOP METHOD of clothing construction" on the envelopes. Bishop method? What the heck is that?

So I googled and it was a book that was first published in 1959 and again in 1966. I found the full version on archive.org. Browsing through it on my phone (not an ideal way to do so) it appears to be just the now-modern way things are constructed.

The Bishop Method of Clothing Construction, first presented in 1959, received widespread acceptance by homemakers, teachers, and students throughout the United States as well as certain areas of Canada, Europe, Free China, and Australia.

This revision reflects additions necessitated by fashion changes as well as certain modern techniques. The Bishop method is founded on a few revolutionary principles and techniques which are essential in the construction of the most elementary garment. It contemplates the maximum use of the sewing machine and the minimum amount of hand work. Sewing is made easier and the joy of accomplishment substituted for the old-fashioned, laborious, and time-consuming pinning and basting method.

The Bishop method embraces the following fundamental principles:

Grain perfection
Accuracy in preparing, cutting, and marking fabric
Cutting to fit
Perfection in stitching
Perfection in pressing

Ooookay then. And yet we still make toiles...

...until we officially move into our new place! I'm still trying to wrap my head around that. It's not helping that I feel like I've been putting off all the packing even though I've done quite a large amount of it (and tossing/donating) already. It's also not helping that the Day Job has had some of its busiest days in months these last couple of weeks. I'm deliberately running on half-speed to conserve energy -- I'm not as fast at work so I can keep some of that oomph to move boxes and bins over to the new place.

We've also been doing a lot of shopping lately, buying stuff for the new place. We've even gotten ourselves a membership to Costco after all these years! Not that we're about to buy Armageddon Preparation Size boxes of cereal mind you, just looking for good deals on things we frequently use and need like household stuff. We're also buying things other than bookshelves (heh) at Ikea for storage modules we will need. We're trying not to go overboard considering we're moving into a slightly smaller space and there's only so much space for storage, but being smart about the space we do have is important. I will be heading to said Costco later today to pick up some storage shelves for the garage.

And INTERNETS! As of yesterday we are all wired up at the new place so that's one more thing to cross off our to-do list. Yay!

I am a little worried about some of the stuff we're getting rid of, though I'm hoping that won't be too much of a problem. We'll be getting rid of our old Dyson vacuum cleaner which we've had for almost 20 years that STILL runs perfectly (not bad for a refurb at that) which I'm sure a neighbor will yoink. The living room couch is going to be tricky, though. It's the one we bought from Home Reserve, known for their really good durable furniture that comes in boxes that you put together yourselves. I want to see if one of our neighbors wants it first before I put it up on FB Marketplace. I'd rather someone take it because aside from a bit of wear and sun fade, it's still in great condition, but if we have to toss it, at least it's gotten sixteen years of use!

I'll be honest, what's bothering me the most is that I'm barely getting any writing work done. I'd packed all my notebooks and brought them over to the new place so I haven't done any journaling in ages. I might squeeze in a few pages of revision and editing on the trilogy remaster, but that's about it. I just haven't had the time. I'd expected this and I'm using the time as a bit of a vacation from all that, but I am SO itching to get back to it once we've moved.

On that note, I have today and tomorrow off and I'd better get moving. Still using pockets of time to rest and relax, but I still have a lot to do.

On Friday I was watching a video when I got home, but I did take my buttski into the kitchen and washed a pan of dishes before making Tumblr's best grilled cheese sammich for dinner. I'd have to dig up the link, but the overview is LOTS of butter (no skimping!), a sweet element (honey), a tart element (dijon mustard), an herb (dill), and at least 2 cheeses. I only had one, but it was still delicious. My honey was mostly solid and only a tiny bit liquidly, but I got enough to enjoy a sweet pop here and there. Very yummy, yes. Then I grabbed the last bit of whatever fabric I'd used to make a pair of Pietra pants and cut out Loretta shorts. I have enough to make the bib as well, but I don't need that right now so I left it uncut.

On Saturday I woke up with a strong pulling in the left side of my throat when I swallowed so I forwent coffee and had tea. (GASP SHOCK) Made myself PB & saskatoon jam toast for breakfast and then sat down to sew. Shorts are now in two halves, awaiting a zipper for the back (grump grumble I have thicc zippers and invisible zippers but no regular zippers. I intend to correct that as soon as I am able). It IS easier to do the zipper while the pieces are still separate OK FINE I ACCEPT THAT bc I totally did it for the Millicent skirt hehehe. I pinned it together for a very careful try on and... I think it's gonna be too big. Nuts! Easy enough to adjust probably but... nuts. Spent the rest of the day in increasingly pretzelly positions on the couch playing video games, until dinner time when I made spaghetti sauce and pasta, and washed another pan of dishes. Then I had insomnia so I was up until something silly like 330 AM reading fanfic.

Hockey game WAS tied but the Knights scored at literally at the last second and won. Nuts.

Yesterday the pulling was gone, so coffee time it is! I'd forgotten the iron was still plugged in but that was OK because I needed to steam the waist of the slip, so that's now done. I sat down to trim down a skirt pattern but oh, I already did that! So after I finished my show, I taped it together and put it away. Put a couple other patterns away. Then cut a Barbara bodice to test. I did a straight size 10 D/DD and it's a little too big at my chest for an un-supported look, so I put on a store-bought bra and that was then too tight bc this bra does not fit me well above the bust apex. Band and wire sizes, perfect 10/10 no notes, but the cups have SO MUCH ROOM above the apex I could definitely have fit kittens in there and I should have tried when they were still small enough to do little more than stare at me. It came so high on my chest that it was digging into my arms. Finally had enough so... I pinned out a tuck, did some stupid fiddly cutting, struggled HARD with getting my machine to stitch through 1/4" of foam (turns out I just needed to use a 100/16 needle instead of my usual 80/12) and it's far from the prettiest thing but now I have a bra that doesn't try to sever a limb. I WILL get new ones (this one is already several years old, and I absolutely plan on salvaging the wire and elastic) soon, but for now, it works.

By then is was around 430 so I decided it was time to get dinner underway. I tried out the multi-cooker my dad gave me, an absolutely massive not-InstaPot, to pressure cook some beans. And you know what, it worked. 20 minutes and they were perfect. Made chili and cornbread and washed TWO pans of dishes. The rest of my evening was more video games.

I am on vacation again next week. No plans to do anything but stay home. Obviously want to sew all the things!!! I do need to get started on the pockets for my side gig (hehe) and that is easy weeknight sewing. I want to get a cutting mat to make many things easier, including that. Just need to decide on what to do! My plan is to NOT be sick so that I may enjoy every day and not spend it in bed wishing I didn't hurt so much. We'll see how well I manage that lol.

Grateful

I decided to move in here before I sold the house because I am an idiot. It was the ultimate counting chickens before eggs situation. Nothing said that the money would not be there eventually but circumstances change. Now, all of the boxes are getting ticked finally and it is such a relief. Last night, my Timber Ridge rent was sucked out of my checking account and, for the first time, I'm not stressed to the gills about next month. Of course the condo sale could still hit a pothole but I don't think it will.

The only item on the agenda today is aqua yoga. I like the stretching and moving of the class but I also like that my friend, Martha, is always there and it's a nice little touch point with her. But, she won't be there today. She has a doctor's appointment. Last week we were the only two in class. This week I may be by myself. Which is fine. Lori, the instructor, is really nice and fun and accommodating to any and all situations.

There isn't much baseball today. And, just before I went to sleep, the book I'm listening to took an interesting turn so I might just settle in here this morning with my knitting and my book - at least for a bit.

1. It was definitely still warm today (really didn't appreciate it while vacuuming!) but was nicer than yesterday, and aside from a walk to the store in the morning and another around the neighborhood in the evening (by which time it had cooled off a lot), we mostly spent it indoors and the house was very pleasant.

2. I totally forgot to mention this in yesterday's post but we ordered dinner from Shake Shack last night and the order was two burgers and a shake. The order arrived later than expected, and whatever, I'm not going to complain about that or the food being cooler than I prefer, because that's just always a possibility with delivery. But although the shake was in a cupholder, someone had put it in sideways, rather than upright, so the whole thing leaked out and not only was my shake ruined but the burgers as well. I can't imagine someone at the restaurant packing the shake like that, so I can only imagine the delivery driver repacked it that way for some reason??? Anyway, thankfully the restaurant is not actually that far away, so I just took the bag with everything back and had them remake it. Annoying to have to do that in the first place, but at least I wasn't left with no dinner (I'm sure I could have gotten a refund over the phone, but I wanted the actual food, especially the seasonal banana shake, which I'd been excited about and was indeed delicious).

A bit late to mention it here, sorry, but yes! We’ll be delivering the keynote in two weeks (May 24th, 10am EST).

We are incredibly proud and honored, honestly. We worked really hard on our session, and we can’t wait for folks to see it! Crow&, Riley, and TW cowrote it, with each of us recording roughly a third of it. This was our first time trying that, and we love how it turned out.

Unfortunately, ticket prices are way higher this year due to Airmeet changing their ticket structure for the worse, but our session (minus the Q&A) will be on the plural events YouTube channel!

Hidden Figures
Finally finished this! There is also a young readers version that's about half as long and I wonder if that might be the better way to go, because this was just really plodding and felt like a slog to get through.

How to Seal Your Own Fate
This was fun. I hope there will be more books in the series.

Hammers on Bone
This is not just Lovecraft-inspired but straight-up Lovecraft fanfic, and as someone who has never actually read any Lovecraft and only knows a few character names and concepts from general osmosis, I felt like I was missing a lot. If that had been more clear in the summary I wouldn't have picked it up in the first place. In addition to that, I just did not like really anything about it. The main character for some reason talks like a stereotype of a noir detective, but in a really grating way. The best thing it had going for it was that it was really short. I have another novella by this author on my to-read list, but honestly this does not make me want to read more from them.

Paranoid Gardens
I picked up this graphic novel because it's by Gerard Way but it was pretty disappointing. So much is going on. Way too much. There's superheroes and aliens and a weird cult based on a cartoon character.

Motherlover
I actually read this a while back on the author's patreon, but it's finally out for real. Super cute f/f graphic novel about a couple of neighbors falling for each other.

Hey, Mary!
Did not realize Andrew Wheeler had a new graphic novel out but this just popped up on Hoopla when I was looking for something quick to read last night. A very religious Catholic teen struggles with accepting that he's gay. I feel like this would be great for kids in a similar situation to read.
